The Institution of Occupational Health and Safety (IOSH) has given a generally positive response to the Department of Work and Pensions' (DWP) report on employers' liability.

In a statement, the IOSH said: "Following the publication of the DWP's second stage report on the review of employers' liability compulsory insurance, the IOSH welcomes the various initiatives made in the report.

"We particularly support moves toward linking insurance premiums with health and safety performance as an additional driver to improved standards.

"We also welcome plans introducing a suitable benchmarking tool; providing better health and safety guidance and information to SMEs and improving national rehabilitation services.

"However, this review is only the beginning of the process and we emphasise that there is still much more work to be done by the government and stakeholders on these issues, not least in the area of occupational health provision.

"The IOSH will continue to champion the need to raise health and safety standards and to prevent work-related ill health and injury."
