The CII has said its new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme is set to revolutionise the way competence is maintained and raise the bar of professional standards.

Launched following extensive consultation, the scheme will apply to all qualified members of the Institute.

CII head of CPD Fiona Andrews said: "This is another important step in our response to the significant pace of change within the industry and our overall drive to support the development of professionals.

"CPD is underpinned by a range of new tools such as the forthcoming Job Role & Competency Framework and the faculties and societies dedicated to supporting key business segments."

The CII said the scheme was designed to dovetail with its up-and-coming job competency framework. It added that for the first time CII members will be able to benchmark themselves against minimum levels of competence for key job roles, identify gaps and, using the CPD tool's educational facility, construct a personal development programme.

The CII's previous CPD scheme had remained largely unchanged since its introduction in the mid 1990s. The CII said extensive research, including work with the Professional Associations Research Network, had been instrumental in the development of the new scheme.
