Drivers who break the law by using hand-held mobile phones after 1 December could be uninsured in the event of an accident, claimed the AA.

AA Insurance Services general manager Geoff Hoyle said many drivers did not realise that if they had an accident while breaking the law they put their insurance at risk.

"If you have an accident while jumping a red traffic light, there's a chance that the damage to your car won't be covered. After 1 December, the same will apply to the use of a hand-held mobile telephone," said Hoyle.

Hoyle said the new law would contribute significantly to improving road safety.
