Two out of three people moving home do not insure their contents before moving to their new place, said Tesco Personal Finance.

Research has shown that half of people moving home admit to taking up to a month before arranging cover for their household contents, with one in ten not having cover up to six months after moving, said the supermarket.

According to its research, 22% of people moving home lose or damage a prized possession while moving. Of those, 18% said it was worth up to £500, and a quarter said it was worth up to £1,500.

Tesco Personal Finance head of insurance Allan Burns, said: “Moving home is one of the most stressful experiences people go through and, worryingly, insurance is the last thing on their minds.

“Roping someone in to help with the move and getting packed come first, but it only takes a few minutes to phone your insurer to arrange cover, and it should be one of the first things you do.”
