Specialist travel intermediary Travelindex is to offer a policy designed to meet the needs of British Muslims travelling to the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages.
The cover will be provided through Travellers Protection Services (TPS) and UK Insurance, and underwritten by Primary Insurance Company, Indemnity Insurance and Norwich Union, said Travelindex.
The policy is designed to meet the needs of those on the lengthy trips, with 31 days' cover selling at £35, long enough to cover travel to and attendance at the long Hajj pilgrimage, said TPS.
The policies will be sold by Travelindex agents as part of the travel arrangements, through mosques and community groups.
TPS said it expected to provide cover for round 10,000 pilgrims in the first year.
TPS sales manager Steve Browne said: “Traditional UK holiday insurance is not always appropriate for this kind of trip, so we have devised a policy which is tailored to meet the needs of Muslims making these important pilgrimages.
“These trips can cost many thousands of pounds, so it has been important not to add to that burden, by keeping premiums low, and by basing our pricing structure on the need for longer trips than traditional holidays.”
