Solicitors' professional indemnity premiums totalled £162m this year, a rise of 6% over last year.

But the rise was not as great as solicitors' fees which rose by an average of 10% in the same period.

St Paul International Insurance retained its position as market leader and estimates it has between 20% and 30% of the market.

It issued quotations to nearly 8,000 practices and said its customers included the majority of the big 30 firms.

St Paul's general manager, London, Paul Cusition said: “We believe we are establishing ourselves as the insurer of choice for quality firms.”
