The volume of motor insurance fines has increased more than seven-fold since 2005, according to new figures.
Junior Home Office minister James Brokenshire informed Labour backbench MP Chris Ruane in a written parliamentary answer, issued last week, that the number of fixed penalty notices issued for vehicle insurance offences climbed from 2,688 in 2005 to 20,045 in 2009- the latest year for which figures are available.
Within the five years covered by Brokeshire’s answer, the biggest increase happened between 2006 and 2007 when the total number of motor insurance fines rose from 6,652 to 12,960.
