The RAC said it welcomed Conservative Party plans to combat the problem of uninsured drivers.

The plans would see people who repeatedly drive without insurance having their vehicles confiscated.

Other elements of the Tory's six-point plan would see the Driver and Vehicle Licensing (DVLA) database linked with the motor insurance database in an effort to identify drivers more easily.

RAC spokesman Rebecca Bell, said: “It's essential that this problem is tackled and the Tory's plans announced today indicate that there is now cross-party consensus on this issue.

“Accidents involving uninsured drivers cost law-abiding motorists over £600m per year in increased insurance premiums, with each and every premium costing an extra £30 per year because of this problem.

The government must work closely with the insurance industry to break the vicious circle of the uninsured driver.”

She added: “The good news is that technologies like electronic vehicle identification can help law enforcers to identify uninsured drivers immediately.

“The Tory's idea of confiscating the vehicles of repeat offenders is the sort of penalty we need to see if we're going to stop these problem drivers in the long-term.”
