Liability insurers of the planes used in the US terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre may be forced to pay up twice, according to sources at Lloyd's.

The liablity cover is $1.7bn (£1.13bn) per event and it is possible that the hijackings could be regarded as two separate events, rather than a single act of terrorism.

But the combined value of the four hijacked planes, two American Airlines and two United Airlines, is lower than expected at $130m (£89m), because of the age of the aircraft.
