Cornell Consulting has produced a guide for small brokers considering joining a network.

The guide explains the key questions that brokers should ask, covering areas such as why join a network, cost of membership and the effect of membership on a broker's independence, according to author Tony Cornell.

"Understanding the facts and asking the right questions is a key part of the decision process when considering a network," he said. How a broker chooses the right network, depended on its future needs, said Cornell.

Key questions to ask

  • What are the aspirations for the network?
  • Do these appear reasonable and achievable?
  • Do members keep their own identity and agencies?
  • What is the cost of membership and how is it calculated?
  • Does the network have any unique arrangements with insurers?
  • What support services will be provided?
