Scientists will be trained to understand natural hazards on a pioneering course at University College London (UCL).
The first ever MSc in geophysical hazards was launched by Benfield Hazard Research Centre, which is sponsored by reinsurance broker and risk manager Benfield.
It will cover geological and meteorological hazards including earthquakes, floods, windstorms, landslides, tsunami, volcanic eruptions, space weather and hazard aspects of climate change.
Students will work on forecasting and assessment techniques as well as developing better decision-making in, for example, medium-term land planning and short-term emergencies, raising the awareness of vulnerable populations, and evaluating mitigation strategies, from evacuation to engineering solutions.
Centre director Professor Bill McGuire said: "With a focus on practicality the course will not only be a valuable academic adjunct to studies on geography and earth sciences, but will equip all students with the knowledge required to assess and map geophysical hazards for application in the workplace".
