It was rumoured that Peter Hubbard, AXA Insurance's chief executive, might have been a candidate for the top job.

One market source said: "He would have wanted the job. It would be a natural move for Hubbard."

But an AXA spokesman said: "This is something we cannot comment on. He might have toyed with the idea, but we aren't aware of this speculation."

Hubbard joined AXA Insurance in 2001 when it was loss making, but it has since made a substantial profit in 2005.

Henri de Castries, chairman of AXA's management board, said: "We are grateful to Dennis Holt for his achievement at AXA UK over the past five years, which has strengthened AXA UK's operations.

"Nicolas Moreau's mission will be to build on these achievements and roll-out a profitable growth strategy in line with our 2012 ambition to become the preferred company in our industry."
