Marks & Spencer said it has upgraded its car insurance product to include European breakdown cover.

It has also extended the period for which it will provide a courtesy car in the event of an accident, from seven to 14 days.

Marks & Spencer Money head of general insurance Peter Longstaff, said: “We are always looking for ways to add value to our insurance policies and this upgrade to our car insurance has been implemented to do just that.

“Our customers tell us that it's inconvenient to be off the road due to an insurance claim, so we give them a car. The extension to the time this car is available allows for the extra time a customer's car may be in the garage.

"The extension to our breakdown cover is designed to give customers peace of mind when travelling abroad. Our basic aim is to keep our customers on the road, whether they are in the UK or in Europe.”
