Motorists who took out free insurance cover when they purchased a new car could be in for “a nasty shock”, warned online broker A Quote this week.

One year's free insurance, offered by manufacturers Ford, Vauxhall and Renault, is often taken up by young drivers, who then find it difficult to afford premiums the following year, the motor broker said.

Most motorists will stick with their existing provider, though this is rarely the cheapest option, the company warned.
