Boy racers pay more than double for their motor insurance compared to drivers in their thirties, according to a study by moneysupermarket.com.

The price comparison site analysed some seven million motor quotes which showed that on average male drivers in their twenties paid some 107% more for their motor cover than men in their thirties, with cover costing approximately £1,123 for a “boy racer” and £543 for an older driver.

Women drivers in their twenties pay on average only £736.

Overall, the study revealed that premiums fell around 5% overall in 2006, with average premiums coming in at £832 compared to £878 for 2005. The average premium for a female driver was £646, down from £667 in 2005, while for men it was £944 compared to £976.

Peter Gerrard, insurance researcher at moneysupermarket.com, said: “It's clear from these statistics that insurers view women as mature motorists in their twenties, while men have to wait a decade longer to have their boy racer premiums wiped out.”
