Homeowners should be more prepared for emergencies in the home, the AA has urged in its `first aid for your home' guide.

The AA found that around half of women and a fifth of men had no idea where to turn off their water supply in an emergency. It also said most people had not checked recently to see if their stopcock worked at all.

The AA warned that this lack of knowledge could become an expensive mistake in the event of an emergency.

It has sent its first aid guide to all its home insurance customers. It contains advice on plumbing, electrics, fire prevention and security.
