Asda has rolled-out its pet insurance to all its 265 stores following a pilot launched in December in 40 of its supermarkets.

According to figures from the Wal-mart-owned company, 78% of households have home contents insurance but only 14% of pet owners have taken out pet insurance.

But Asda said only 10% of homeowners make claims on their contents insurance, while up to 30% make a claim for treatment for their pets.

Asda financial services director David Rutley said the average pet insurance claim is now approximately £200, prompting the supermarket to step up its pet insurance campaign.
