More than half of the 100,000 gap year students travelling outside Europe, Australasia and North America lack adequate insurance and vaccinations, according to a survey from the Gap Year Company.

For the royalists among us, there will be much nail-biting as Buckingham Palace would not be drawn on whether the student Prince William has comprehensive cover on his current travels.

Asked whether our future king was protected from dangerous diseases and robbery by South American bandits, a palace spokeswoman said: "It is a personal matter and we will not comment."
