Catastrophes cost US insurers a total of $8.8bn in 2006, according to the ISO's Property Claims Services.
Five states — Indiana, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas and Kansas — accounted for more than half the losses.
There were 33 catastrophic events during the year, but only one storm of catastrophe proportions — Tropical Storm Ernesto, which caused $250m worth of property damage.
ISO also indicated that insurers received more than 2.2 million claims for damage, with personal lines accounting for 58%, commercial lines 9% and vehicle claims 33%.
