Almost half of all business travellers are not insured for company theft, according to Company Barclaycard.

Their latest study casts a shadow over company insurance coverage, with the news that only 40% of small businesses cover property used on business travel.

1 in 10 business travellers are now victims of theft, and, with business equipment costing £2000 on average businesses are leaving themselves exposed to risk, it said.

The scope for losses is growing with over two-thirds of business travellers carrying a mobile, and a third carrying a laptop on business trips, it said.

Spokesman Simon Chick said: "It is alarming that so many people are making business trips when they are uninsured."

Businesses are being urged to provide adequate cover as business enters its busiest period for business travel.

Chick added: "September and October are traditionally the busiest times of the year for business travel and we always notice a hike in claims for loss in theft of kit."
