Three people have been arrested and charged by Lothian & Borders police specialist fraud unit in connection with the collapse of insurance intermediary Tribune Risk & Insurance Services.

Tribune went into liquidation in 2003, leaving 40,000 policyholders without cover.

A Lothian & Borders police spokesman confirmed that John Walker, 55, his wife Evelyn, 56, and son Paul, 30, had been arrested and charged following "extensive inquiries" carried out by the fraud unit.

"The three will be the subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal," a police statement said.

In December 2003, Pricewaterhouse-Coopers, which was appointed as liquidator of Tribune, said it had found outstanding claims worth around £2m made on Tribune household policies.

Sources now estimate that the total amount involved in the alleged fraud could be as high as £8m.
