A season of severe injuries has forced the Rugby Football Union (RFU) to reconsider how it will pay a whopping £3m insurance bill.

Premiums have soared after at least 10 players of all standards suffered injuries during last season which could leave them paralysed or severely disabled.

It is understood the unprecedented rise in injuries has pushed premiums up 20% from £2.5m in September last year to £3m at the start of the 2005 season.

There is speculation this week that the RFU could seek other ways of funding because the ever-rising bill has become a "major" problem.
