Risk managers are to simulate a major incident that could threaten the financial status of Britain's public services at the ALARM conference.

The incident will test their ability to implement crisis management and contingency plans to minimise the potential fallout.

The "crisis" will test the expertise of risk managers from a range of public sector bodies attending the conference of the South East region of ALARM - the National Forum for Risk Management in the Public Sector in November.

The exercise has been devised by Glasgow Caledonian University. Spokesperson Margaret Davis said: "There will be a free choice in the answers the delegates give and we will assess each one against what we think the solutions should be.

She said: "There will be a free choice in the answers the delegates give and we will assess each one against what we think the solutions should be.

"I hope it will prompt people to take a broader view of risk management using educational style settings.

The ALARM South East 2002 Conference will take place on 6 and 7 November at the Latimer Conference Centre in Buckinghamshire.
