Royal & SunAlliance shares fell to 95p, equal to their 52-week-low point, as the FTSE 100 suffered under the weight of economic gloom today.

By mid afternoon in the UK the blue chip index had lost 133 points to 3,891 after a dismal opening in Wall Street and falls on European bourses.

Insurers across Europe suffered proportionately worse with R&SA, Axa, Aviva, Fortis and Zurich Financial Services all losing more than 8%.

R&SA was down 11.89% to 94.5p, Axa lost 10.84% at Euros 10.1, Aviva lost 8.53% at 343p, Fortis lost 8.92% at Euros 15.6 and Zurich lost 9.57% at 5,100p in London.
