Insurer's claims team study Weston-Super-Mare pier damage.
QBE has confirmed it is the insurer for the Grand Pier at Weston-Super-Mare, destroyed by a fire on Monday. Within 90 minutes of the fire breaking out the whole of the four-towered Art Deco pavilion at the end of the pier had collapsed in on itself.
The Grade II listed building was so badly damaged that only the skeleton of the structure remains.
The owner of the pier, entrepreneur Kerry Michael, bought it in February and spent £1m on renovating the now-destroyed pavilion and adding new attractions and rides.
A QBE spokesman, said: “QBE confirms it is involved in the property related insurances of the Grand Pier at Weston-Super-Mare. Our claims team are already investigating this incident and a specialist adjusting team has been instructed. We can offer no further information at this stage.”
