Norwich Union (NU) has launched an initiative to give its 4,500 claims staff the opportunity to develop their skills and aid their career progression.

The academy, which was designed in-house, will help claims staff offer an improved, efficient, consistent and informed service to customers and brokers.

The training awards have been tailored to the specific needs of staff and the business and different levels of awards will be available including certificates and diplomas.

Staff will achieve these awards by providing evidence of their level of competency following activities such as formal training courses, technology-based training, interactive workshops, on-the-job training and mentoring.

The awards have achieved external accreditation and are recognised by the Oxford Cambridge RSA examination board, one of the UK's major awarding bodies.

Norwich Union's director of claims, Simon Machell, said: "We spend about £3.5bn each year on settling claims so it's really important that our people have good training in how they manage and deliver the claims service."

Norwich Union said the training is available from the end of July and it is anticipated that every member of claims staff across the 23 claims locations in the UK will eventually participate in this academy.
