NFU Mutual has been named the best insurance company in a survey that asked 46,000 motorists to rate their insurer or broker across five areas: communication, helpfulness, speed to settle a claim, value for money and overall service.

Customers of NFU Mutual praised the company’s local customer service and efficiency and more than 97% of respondents said that they would renew their policy with the firm, even though it is not the cheapest insurer, The Telegraph reports.

The Auto Express Driver Power survey, in partnership with Telegraph Motoring, identified Diamond as the worst performing company, coming in just behind Swiftcover. Diamond was criticised by customers for errors appearing on policies, and for the time it took for claims to be resolved.

The study also carried out a mystery shopper exercise to identify which insurer offered the lowest premiums. Insurers were asked for quotes for a 25-year-old sales manager driving a Ford Fiesta, a 40-year-old publicity manager driving a Vauxhall Insignia and a 55-year-old dentist driving a BMW 530d.

Esure was found to be the cheapest for all three drivers, returning prices of £601.32, £217 and £205.83 respectively.
