As the UK government continues its trial of e-scooters, Zego has a new European partner whose focus is e-scooter safety

Insurtech Zego has partnered with a European e-scooter company called TIER to provide insurance for its fleet that is soon to be rolled out in the UK.

Berlin-based, TIER chose Zego specifically as a partner due to its technology centric approach and background of working with fleet and micromobility.

For TIER, the deal represents an important step as it aims to make sure its e-scooter model is implemented in UK cities in a safe and responsible way. As it has done with the same approach in Paris and Lyons that resulted in the firm winning tenders.

TIER is currently participating in tenders for trials in cities across the UK.

Sten Saar, chief executive and co-founder of Zego, said: “TIER has achieved a huge amount in a short space of time, and we are very excited about supporting the company as it establishes itself in the UK.

“E-scooters can play a major role in making cities greener and less congested, but they need to be insured in the right way that gives everyone peace of mind. We’re very happy to be fulfilling this role.”

Zego will uses its experience of insuring TIER’s fleet during these trials to inform future policy decisions on the wide-scale adoption of e-scooters.

It follows the government’s move to legalise rental e-scooters on the UK’s roads as part of a 12-month trial.

Zego recently partnered with e-scooter firm Ginger last month to insure e-scooters in a trial in Teeside.

Safety first

Zego’s policy will insure all TIER e-scooters deployed in the UK.

The cover will be fully integrated into the rider sign-up process. This is so users have the government’s required Third-Party Liability insurance.

But TIER will absorb the price of the insurance, therefore no extra cost is passed onto its riders.

TIER was founded in 2018 and has already established a global e-scooter market share of over 20% operating in 70 cities across nine countries.

It claims that its e-scooters are renowned for their safety features, it became the first operator to introduce a foldable box for helmets which UK riders will be able to use.

Fred Jones, TIER UK manager, said: “E-scooters offer huge environmental and mobility benefits for UK cities, but they need to be introduced in a way that makes everyone feel confident and safe, especially other road users.

“A big part of this will be ensuring that we and our riders are properly covered for accidents, by an insurer who truly understands our market and what we’re trying to achieve. With this in mind, Zego is a natural partner for TIER.”

Zego also has the ability to support TIER’s real-time data analysis which will help it to better understand the driving behaviour of its riders.
