’He had a profoundly positive impact on everyone he worked with,’ says insurer

Tributes have been paid to RSA veteran Ian Bostock after the insurer announced the death of its former colleague.

Bostock joined RSA in 1986 as an underwriter and ended up staying with the firm for more than three decades.

He held a range of senior roles, most recently serving as the personal lines underwriting, governance and change director, before retiring in 2019.

In a LinkedIn post, RSA said it was “deeply saddened to announce the passing” of Bostock.

“Ian had a profoundly positive impact on everyone he worked with, always dedicated to developing people and nurturing emerging talent,” it said.

“His career with us spanned 34 years, during which he held various roles, primarily in personal lines underwriting, pricing and governance.

“He began his journey in Liverpool, spent many years in Oldham and finally in Horsham before retiring in December 2019.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Ian’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

Tributes

After the insurer announced his death, many further tributes were paid to Bostock.

Sarah-Jane Walker, pricing excellence leader at RSA, said she was employed by Bostock and that he got the best out of people.

“Ian was such a special person and a dear friend from the day he employed me nearly 30 years ago,” she said.

“Ian was kind, thoughtful, caring and fun, both in and out of work. He touched so many people and those who worked for him thrived.

“Ian simply brought the best out in people, by giving people his time and the opportunities to shine. I miss him, as will many others. My heart goes out to Ian’s lovely partner Sue.”

Emma Loynes, chief executive of Lloyd’s Asia and country manager for Singapore, added: “Sending my sincere condolences to Ian’s family for their loss.

“Having worked with Ian on the TMA, [I] would echo the many sentiments about his kindness, compassion and tireless support of others. A truly special person.”

And Andrew Sutcliffe, who is a freelance data scientist that used to work with Bostock, said: “I am so shocked and saddened to learn about Ian. I worked with Ian at RSA between 1993 and 2004 initially in the personal lines unit in NHP, Liverpool and later at the broker unit in Werneth House, Oldham.

“At Liverpool I used to play badminton with Ian and his brother before a swift pint at the Legion in Aigburth. He was a friend, a gentleman and a true legend. Taken far too soon.”
