Michelle Taylor, broker distribution director at Aviva, talks through the new Insurance Broker of the Year category at this year’s Insurance Times Awards

1. Why have you worked in collaboration with Insurance Times to create the new Insurance Broker of the Year category at this year’s Insurance Times Awards?

It’s always been our goal to stand beside brokers and champion the ways they support our shared customers every day. That’s why we’re proud to sponsor this new award that recognises excellence in the broker industry.

Open to all brokers, regardless of size or specialism, brokers will be judged on their financial performance, how they deliver great customer outcomes and invest in their people and communities.

We know there are a lot of brokers out there who do this every day and we would encourage them to enter.

2. What types of firms would you like to see enter this new category and what traits will make these entries stand out from the crowd?

I’m fortunate in my role to work with a wide range of passionate and talented brokers and I know there are even more out there.

I’d love to see entries that reflect the wide range of talent across the industry – brokers that know their clients and deliver for them, day in, day out, who are committed to their communities and who go the extra mile to create great opportunities for their people.

3. Why do you think it is important to recognise the work of brokers at awards events such as the Insurance Times Awards?

I don’t think any of us – brokers or insurers – are in the business just to win an award.

But when a business consistently goes that extra mile – going above and beyond for customers every day, playing an important role in their community, or creating exciting career opportunities for their people – that excellence should be recognised.

It can be inspiring to hear about and shines a positive light on the insurance industry, while helping to raise the industry standard.

4. How would you describe the role of brokers in the UK general insurance market?

Brokers remain an integral force in helping individuals and businesses understand their insurance needs and how to best protect themselves.

You need only to look at the last several years to know that the world is a less certain place than it used to be. Brokers play a pivotal role for their customers, setting their understanding of their customers’ risks onto the wider risk landscape to ensure they have the right level of insurance cover to suit their individual needs.

5. What are you most looking forward to at this year’s Insurance Times Awards?

The Insurance Times Awards in December is always a spectacular event. We’re excited to see which brokers are shortlisted across all of the categories this year, in particular those that will make the shortlist for the inaugural Insurance Broker of the Year award.

The Aviva team are also submitting some great case studies of our own into the insurer categories so we have our fingers crossed for all involved and look forward to the celebrations in December.
