Insurers need to examine the way motorcycle premiums are calculated, according to a report from MVRA.

MVRA's quality assured (QA) motorcycle network found that there are significant differences in the average repair costs of popular bikes.

The report urged the industry to develop a new basis for insurance group ratings.

MVRA managing director Mike Monaghan said: "At the moment insurance groupings for bikes are largely based on their engine capacity, but this isn't the most accurate way to gauge the cost of repairs. There is little point in putting most 600cc bikes into a group 14 or every 1000cc model into a group 17. It seems that some premiums are estimates, based on whether or not the insurer wants to increase or decrease their motorcycle portfolio.

"The FireBlade comes in at £1782.03, whereas the GSX-R750 and the R1 cost £2883.49 and £2424.41 respectively. These differences are too large to ignore and I hope they'll ultimately have an effect on bike insurance premiums.

"I am sure that a more sophisticated method of calculating repair costs will lead to tighter control of repair costs and this will ultimately benefit both the insurers and the riders."

The statistics show the average repair costs for all the jobs that go through the MVRA QA motorcycle programme.
