Mobile phone insurers will see claims fall by as much as 10% following a government initiative, the CPP Group predicted.

The group, which provides assistance products and services, said it had signed up to support the government's Immobilise mobile phone initiative and will register all new insurance customer handsets onto the National Mobile Phone Register, a new database recently launched by the National Mobile Phone Crime Unit (NMPCU).

CPP said its business partners were set to enjoy a reduction in the number of insurance claims submitted of between 5% and 10%, as a result of handsets being returned to their rightful owners and fraudsters thinking twice about submitting a false claim. Consumers will be able to avoid the need to claim on their insurance and face having to pay an excess fee.

Under the scheme, CPP will be notified if a handset of one of its customers is recovered and will take steps to reunite them with their phones. The database will allow police forces throughout the UK to identify lost and stolen handsets and their rightful owners.

The Immobilise initiative helps to dissuade fraudsters from making bogus claims due to the police having an access to a central register of stolen handsets.
