Lloyd's has accredited its first Scandinavian broker, Danish reinsurance broker Kirecon. This means Kirecon will now have direct access to the Lloyd's market and its underwriters and will not have to go through a London-based intermediary.

Kirecon, which specialises in reinsurance for Nordic insurance companies, was established in 1988. It has placed business at Lloyd's for over 12 years.

Kirecon general manager Niels Kirschberg said: "Accreditation means that Kirecon's clients, and potentially other Nordic insurance companies, can have immediate and direct access to one of the world's most important reinsurance markets, giving them wider choice and a competitive advantage."

Lloyd's premium income from Scandinavia in 2002 totalled €285m (£183.1m), making it one of the most significant regional markets for the market.

Kirecon is the fifth European broking firm located outside the UK that Lloyd's has accredited since new accreditation arrangements were introduced in January 2001.

The accreditation process requires brokers to demonstrate their suitability by meeting a series of standards laid down by Lloyd's, including financial arrangements, customer service levels, and a strong national system of regulation.
