Insurers are suffering on European stock exchanges over fears about the US economy and conflict with Iraq.
The risk sector was hit particularly hard in early trading today after Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan presented a pessimistic analysis of the US economy.
Axa fell by 5.85% with Allianz down by 4.11% and Fortis down by 2.12%.
Allianz had earlier said it was boosting a US subsidiary by $750m to cover asbestos and environmental liabilities.
Britain's Royal & SunAlliance was down by 3.72%.
