The heart of London's financial community will observe a minute's silence in remembrance of the events of September 11.

Indeed the silence is expected to be observed everywhere throughout the financial world.

Lloyd's of London will hold a remembrance service and halt trading. Business will halt at 13.46 on the Euronext Liffe derivatives exchange and at Cantor Fitzgerald, the firm that lost 700 employees in the World Trade Centre attacks.

The minute's silence will also be observed at a memorial service at St Paul's Cathedral in London.

Lloyd's will remember the events in a ceremony led at 10.45am. The Lutine Bell will signal one minute's silence.

Lloyd's chairman Saxon Riley said: "The tragedy of September 11 struck at the heart of our community. We are closing the market for a short time so that people have a chance to remember and pay their respects.

"Many of us will also be following the other services taking place later that day - both here and especially in our sister city of New York - and observing the nationwide one-minute silence."

Up to 4,000 brokers and underwriters gathered last year when Lloyd's rang the Lutine Bell two days after the attacks.

Many wholesale markets will also be observing two separate one-minute silences.

Many staff across London will hold a minute's silence at 13.46 - the time of the attacks. Then at 15.29, another silence will be held.
