Half of UK households are underinsured on their home contents, according to research conducted by insurer Liverpool Victoria.
The research indicates that less than half of UK households have adequate cover and this could leave 25 million people unable to replace their contents.
Liverpool Victoria's head of external affairs Nigel Snell said: "It is alarming to think that so many people risk not being able to replace their belongings by having insufficient levels of cover for their home contents.
If people have an overall sum insured policy and do not have sufficient levels of cover, any claim may be proportionately reduced to reflect the level of underinsurance or the claim could be refused altogether."
