Net written premiums for Legal & General's general insurance business grew 27% in the year ending 31 December 2001, up to £387m from £304m in 2002.

Operating profit for the sector fell to £41m from £46m in 2002, but Legal & General said all classes of business had remained profitable.

Legal & General's household account, which represents 80% of its general insurance business, had an operating profit of £17m, slightly down on the £18m for 2002.

It said the operating profit was hit by increased subsidence claims of £25m (£9m for 2002) following the exceptionally dry summer.

For the group, operating profit was £795m, up from £695m in 2002.
