Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis has described his country's current cold spell as the worst weather for 40 years.
The freezing conditions closed Athens international airport over the weekend. At the height of the holiday season this is likely to bring an influx of claims, according to insurers. On Monday morning, no flights were permitted to take off from the airport but some planes were allowed to land. Airport officials said they expected flights to leave later in the day.
The Greek National Meteorological Service said it expected snowfall to weaken and the weather to improve from Tuesday, .
Snow has also disrupted flights in Turkey with several domestic and international departures from Istanbul cancelled.
