RSA in warning for winter.

RSA is urging retailer to make sure they are covered against power cuts.

The decommissioning of nuclear power stations and the debates around building new generators has meant that there is a reduction in electricity being generated.

With an expected 2% increase in demand, this means that this year there is a high risk of frequent short power cuts.

For retailers, this can present major problems in the form of no lights, no tills and no credit card machines.

Without these, they cannot operate and many retailers have not considered protection.

Perhaps more serious are the long term consequences of a power cut to food retailers who use fridges, freezers to store their produce.

A power failure could mean their stock deteriorates rapidly causing losses or even the possibility of customer complaints if the stock is sold despite being unsafe for consumption.

Des Cross, retail director of RSA, said, "There is much that retailers can do to protect their businesses against the anticipated power cuts.

“Insurance that covers against deterioration of stock is recommended, as well as business interruption cover.

“Retailers should also ensure that theft cover is in place as a shop's contents are at greater risk due to the lack of light and security.

"Another way to prepare for a power failure would be to install a back up generator. This must be big enough to support the building and must be tested regularly, and of course must be insured as well."
