Europa Technologies has launched a new Ordnance Survey map service, designed to help insurers respond quickly to disaster claims.

The new service, called viaEurope Express, delivers detailed Ordnance Survey cartography of every location in the UK to desktop computers and mobile devices. The mapping is updated 5,000 times a day nationally.

viaEurope Express is a hosted solution, which means the insurers do not need to store or manage the map data themselves.

“The challenge faced by the insurance industry is that the actual location for which mapping is needed in response to an event is not known in advance," said Europa Technologies director and founder Warren Vick in a statement. “Traditionally, the only way to plan for this would be to hold a large-scale topographic map dataset for the entire country. This is expensive to license and presents significant challenges in handling the huge data volumes required."

He added that with viaEuropa Express, insurers can acquire maps for a specific area of interest and receive the data through a web-based interface.
