Guardian legal expert demands all party support for Jackson
Lawyer and Guardian legal columnist Marcel Berlins has welcomed Lord Justice Jackson’s proposed changes demanding all parties commit to implementing the changes in full.
“It is regrettably too late to legislate before the general election, but there will be no excuse for failing do so soon afterwards, whichever government is in power.
“Indeed, I hope to see a promise of action in the manifestos of all the main parties. But there must not be cherry picking. Jackson's reforms are interlocking and interdependent.
“The English civil legal system, based on "justice for all", was once the envy of the world. That respect has long gone, to be replaced by a grim reputation as the most expensive in the world. Jackson offers the opportunity to regain a measure of pride,” he wrote.
