Coastguard volunteers in Pembrokeshire, Wales are at the centre of a dispute over insurance claims.
According to reports, the dispute hinges on a claim of inadequate compensation from one volunteer rescuer who injured himself whilst on call.
Macfarlane, who damaged his knee whilst rescuing an animal from a cliff, subsequently lost his paying job as a social worker.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said it has paid Macfarlane an undisclosed amount to cover the costs incurred.
The MCA has also said it has no remit to change the coastguard's current injuries benefit scheme. 21 coastguard teams from across the UK have joined in the action.
