Highway has conducted research into brokers' attitudes towards the changes to the Motor Insurance Deadline (MID).

The survey reveals widespread scepticism about the effectiveness of the reduction in the deadline for updating records from 14 to seven days.

Only 51% of brokers believe the new deadline is workable. Brokers with an annual premium income of £10m-£20m are the most pessimistic about the change. Regionally, South-East brokers are the most optimistic, with 62% believing the scheme remains workable.

In terms of insurer assistance with meeting the new requirements, super regional brokers were less satisfied than their Lloyd's and national counterparts.

However, 69% of brokers were satisfied that the broking sector itself is doing as much as possible to implement the changes.

But only 61% of brokers back the initiative and believe it will reduce the number of uninsured drivers.

Michael Lawrence, Highway's sales and marketing director, said: “With a seven day deadline for MID records looming it is vital that brokers are given all the help they need to deliver this vital information without reducing the efficiency of their businesses. Only by working together at this stage can we hope to achieve the long term aim of a real-time database to tackle the serious problem of uninsured drivers in the UK.”
