Bristol-based private medical insurer BCWA Healthcare said surplus nearly tripled in 2003, reaching £2.8m for the year, up from £1.0m in 2002.

It said earned premiums for 2003 had increased to a record £64.4m, with £57.6m paid out in benefits to the association’s members.

Chairman Keith Lansdown attributed the rise in surplus to a much stronger investment performance during 2003, when compared with the previous year.

BCWA Healthcare is a not-for-profit organisation.
