The new 33-storey Barclays headquarters to be built at Canary Wharf has been designed as one of the most terrorist-resistant buildings in the UK.
The enhanced safety specifications include anti-bioterror air conditioning, strengthened flooring to prevent progressive collapse and a thicker concrete core. Hiscox world terrorism and political violence underwriter Stephen Ashwell said better protected buildings could receive more advantageous cover. But he said: "Underwriters tend to look at their aggregate exposures, rather than the specifics of the individual buildings they are covering."
Ashwell also thought it unlikely that underwriters would insist on higher building standards in the future.
