Administrative life insurance roles will move from York, Sheffield and Norwich to Pune
Aviva has confirmed plans to move 600 jobs from its life insurance division from England to India.
The move is part of a cost-saving exercise that last month outlined plans to cut 2,000 jobs across the global business.
The 600 back-office roles will be shed from offices in York, Sheffield and Norwich and moved to Pune in India by 2014.
Aviva said: “Maintaining good customer service while achieving cost efficiencies remains central to our organisation. After careful review we have identified around 600 roles where offshoring will achieve significant cost savings.
“The number of full-time employees impacted by this decision will be significantly less, as we expect at least a third of the role reductions to be met by closure of vacancies, temporary contracts, and natural turnover.
“We appreciate this is a difficult time for our staff and will be working closely with those affected to ensure they get all the support they need.”
Trade union Unite accused Aviva of “betraying” its UK workforce and called on the insurer to reverse the decision.
“Aviva has a responsibility to the communities it profits from. It’s bad enough exporting jobs overseas when the UK economy is strong, but when Britain’s economy is suffering it’s outrageous that the insurer isn’t supporting employment in the UK,” said national officer Dominic Hook.
