’We hope an emergency situation doesn’t arise, but when it does, we clearly want to play our part,’ says head of enterprise risk

Ecclesiastical has joined the National Emergencies Trust’s (NET) Appeal Partners Programme to support UK communities during national crises.

The programme brings together organisations that can mobilise resources, networks and knowledge during national emergencies.

Ecclesiastical will contribute its risk management expertise to strengthen crisis preparedness and response efforts.

Sarah Pearson, head of enterprise risk at Ecclesiastical, said: “This partnership reflects our shared commitment to supporting communities through times of urgent need.

”We hope an emergency situation doesn’t arise, but when it does, we clearly want to play our part. By sharing our risk management expertise with the NET, we can help to strengthen the resilience of communities across the UK.”

Mhairi Sharp, chief executive at the NET, added: “Cross-society collaboration is vital during emergencies. It means efforts aren’t duplicated, resources are applied effectively and, most importantly, that those affected receive the best possible care.

”The Appeal Partners Programme helps to facilitate that collaboration, so we’re delighted that Ecclesiastical is joining as our newest member. Its networks and specialist expertise will make a huge difference when its needed most.”

Education

As climate change increases storm frequency and flood risks in the UK, industry experts at an Insurance Times roundtable last year highlighted the urgent need for flood education to enhance resilience among insurance customers.

Louise Clark, general insurance policy advisor at the ABI, explained: “It is a very young market and there is still [more to do] on raising awareness [about flood resilience].

“I did a series of local radio interviews at the start of the year. There are a lot more questions about Build Back Better, property flood resilience and what can people do if they are flooded to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Build Back Better is an initiative launched by public-private reinsurance scheme Flood Re in April 2022. It offers policyholders the opportunity to install property flood resilience measures up to the value of £10,000 when repairing their properties after a flood.
