Agency Underwriting Limited (AUL) has warned insurers who have decided to turn to the direct route instead of going through broker channels, that they will face trouble when looking for new business.

“We have worked closely with the intermediary market over the last 12 years and we have been shocked at the way many direct insurers have ignored the experience and knowledge of intermediaries in their increasing desperation to gain market share at almost any expense,” said AUL managing director Richard Lamberth.

“There is no doubt that today's broker is better placed than ever before to properly assess the needs of consumers.

“With so few people fitting into the neat, standard boxes that direct insurer call centres would like and with price being the main consideration for the consumer, the almost inevitable result will be inappropriate insurance cover and customer complaints when claims are not paid.

“Insurers should be aware that intermediaries have long memories and know just who has supported them in these difficult times.”
