The Motor Insurance Anti-Fraud and Theft Register (MIAFTR) is to be redeveloped by vehicle information providers HPI after it signed a deal with the ABI. It said the system was due to be ready in mid-2004.
The new version of the total loss vehicle database, called MIAFTR2, will have improved data accuracy and increased fraud detection capabilities, said HPI. The system will also provide the DVLA with information to support the recently launched Vehicle Identity Check scheme.
HPI said the two systems would have a period of dual running to facilitate the transition between systems, which it said would be completed by the end of 2004.
It said it expected the range of companies contributing to the database to widen to include more self-insurers and fleet operators, from its current base of ABI member motor insurers.
