AM Best said the A+ (superior) financial strength rating for American Re and its subsidiaries was unaffected by the company's recently announced pretax charge of $368m.

The charge covered additional reserve strengthening for the 1997 to 2001 accident years.

The ratings agency said it had already contemplated a sizable reserve deficiency, and therefore, the company's stand-alone capitalisation remained supportive of the group's superior financial strength rating.
